NTSB Finds Pressure Relief Issues on Derailed Freight Train

Sends written testimony to Senate before railroad safety hearing.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported that it found compromised pressure relief valves on five of the freight cars involved in Norfolk Southern’s February 3 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy added in written testimony ahead of a Senate Commerce hearing on rail safety that “investigators found that further metallurgical testing of the [pressure release devices] and valves, including valve stems, is warranted to evaluate their performance and compatibility with the vinyl chloride lading.”

NTSB investigators are set to review accident response effectiveness, tank car design, and derailment damage.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chairwoman Homendy as she leads the National Transportation Safety Board.
  • For Secretary Buttigieg to be discerning as he works with safety officials regarding train derailments.
